Wakeboarding Charters in Gulfport
Captain Allen's personal favorite water sport, with patient coaching, all the gear and a boat set up to get first-timers standing.
Wakeboarding in Gulfport is our personal favorite, and it shows on every charter. It is more challenging than the other water sports, yet riders from 5-year-old beginners to 70-year-young adventurers regularly get up on their first trip. Captain Allen, a Tampa Bay native, has been wakeboarding these waters since he bought his first boat at 18. If the board feels like too much, you can switch to water skiing in Gulfport anytime.
Riders on vacation in Treasure Island are about 20 minutes from the protected water where Captain Allen teaches, and St. Pete Beach guests are even closer.
How We Get You Standing
Before you ever touch the water, Captain Allen covers the basic technique and the safety rules. You start in deep water, floating in your life jacket with the board in front of you. Keep your arms straight, bend your knees and let the boat pull you up. The most common first-timer mistake is trying to haul yourself up with your arms, and the second is staring down at the board instead of looking ahead.
Speed and rope length make a big difference for a new rider. Captain Allen adjusts both to your size and skill level, which makes it easier to get up on the board. Once you are riding, he can keep the pull smooth while you build confidence, or set you up for small crossings over the wake.
Skills You Will Pick Up
A first wakeboarding session usually covers deep water starts, proper body position, basic turning and safe falling. These skills form the base of every wakeboarding move, and knowing how to fall safely keeps you coming back for more instead of nursing sore muscles. Average fitness works fine, since good instruction matters more than strength. Once the basics feel natural, small jumps and turns come next.
What to Wear and Bring
Dress for the water. A swimsuit or board shorts works fine, and a rash guard protects you from sun and rope burn. Water shoes are optional, and the life jacket comes from us, sized to fit. Pack sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat, plus a towel and whatever drinks and snacks you like, because the boat does not supply food.
If the Board Is Not Your Thing
Wakeboarding takes a few tries for most people, and that is fine. On a private charter, you choose the activities. If the board feels too hard, switch to kneeboarding, the easier ride, where the rope hooks onto the front of the board. Younger kids who are not ready for any board can stay busy with family tubing runs between wakeboard sets.
Captain Allen calls wakeboarding his personal favorite, so he is just as happy coaching a nervous first-timer as a rider working on wake crossings. Nobody gets rushed, and every rider gets the time they need.
Gear, Rates and Charter Length
The wakeboard, rope and life jackets are all included, and water sports cost nothing extra. Our private charter rates are per trip, so a family or a few friends share one price. The 2-hour trip works well for 1 to 3 riders, while groups of 3 to 6 usually book 3 or 4 hours to give everyone plenty of board time.
Riders come to us from all over Pinellas County. Some are St. Petersburg locals learning on a weekend morning. Others are staying on the beaches near Madeira Beach and John's Pass and make the drive to our Gulfport launch.
No prior experience is needed, and you get as much or as little guidance as you want. For a morning wakeboard session, reach Captain Allen at 727-709-0088 by call or text, since that is when the water is often at its smoothest. Groups of 7 or more should call before booking, since Coast Guard regulation limits the boat to 6 passengers at a time.

Gulfport Wake Conditions
Why Protected Gulfport Water Helps New Wakeboarders
Calm water is the biggest advantage a new wakeboarder can have. Gulfport's protected waters see less chop than the open Gulf, so the board tracks straight and the wake stays clean instead of mixing with chop. Morning sessions often bring the smoothest conditions of the day.
Captain Allen knows the best wakeboarding spots around Gulfport and Boca Ciega Bay, and he moves the boat when the wind shifts rather than asking you to fight rough water. That knowledge comes from growing up here: skimboarding at the beach, then wakeboarding and wakeskimming with friends behind his own boat. Riders driving over from South Pasadena are only minutes from the launch. After a few sets, plenty of groups cool off with a run out to Egmont Key and its fort ruins.
