Egmont Key sits at the mouth of Tampa Bay, and the only way to get there is by water. That's a big part of its appeal. There are no cars, no crowds on the road, and no rush. Just an island with a historic lighthouse, the ruins of Fort Dade, and some of the best snorkeling you can reach from Gulfport.
Here's what a private Egmont Key boat tour with us actually looks like.
Why Go by Private Boat
On a private charter, the trip is built around your group, not a schedule. Up to six guests share the boat, the music is your choice, and we spend time where your group wants to spend it. Some families want to explore the island for an hour. Others want to get in the water right away. Both work.
Snorkeling the Fort Ruins
The old Fort Dade structures reach into the shallows, and fish gather around the ruins. It's an easy, calm place to snorkel, even if you've never done it. We provide all the snorkeling gear and life jackets, and I'm happy to give as much or as little guidance as you'd like. Beginners are welcome.
Walk the Island
Once we're anchored, take time to walk the beach and see the lighthouse and the old fort wall. It's a favorite spot for group photos. Bring water, sunscreen and a hat, and plan on getting your feet wet.
Add Shell Key or a Dolphin Watch
Egmont Key pairs well with other stops. A 3-hour trip combines snorkeling with an Egmont Key tour. A 4-hour or 6-hour day leaves room for shelling at Shell Key, tubing or wakeboarding, and a dolphin run along the way. Dolphins are often active in the early morning and in the late afternoon, though I can never promise a sighting.
What to Bring
- Sunscreen, hats and sunglasses
- A towel and a change of clothes
- Water and snacks
- A phone case or waterproof pouch
There's no restroom on the boat, so plan a stop at the dock before we head out.
Which Trip Length Fits
- 2 hours: one activity, such as an Egmont Key tour or snorkeling
- 3 hours: two activities, such as snorkeling plus Egmont Key
- 4 hours: our most popular trip, with room to mix water sports, snorkeling and shelling
- 6 hours: a full day to do everything
